Obama works to shore up voter base

Obama works to shore up voter base

By: Erin Billups
As the 2012 presidential campaign season inches closer, President Obama is working to shore up his base, but economic pressures are making that a more difficult task. Erin Billups has more.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- "I expect all of you to march with me and press on," President Barack Obama.
Speaking at a gathering of the nation's black political elite, Obama made a plea to his base to stay on his side. But with the struggling economy plaguing minority communities, many say the President simply hasn't done enough.
"We love the President, we want him to be successful, but does he feel our pain?" asked Rep. Maxine Waters.
"We celebrate rising to the heights of U.S. government and at the same time falling deeper into the depths of poverty and miseducation," said television personality Tavis Smiley said.
Waters and Smiley both crisscrossed the nation on jobs tours this summer highlighting the nearly 17 percent black unemployment rate, almost double the national average. It's an issue they say could cause blacks to turn away from Obama in 2012.
"I think they were looking for an overnight change and when that didn't happen, they were a little disappointed. But overall, I don't think that they're not ready to go ahead and vote for another president," said Taneshia Rice.
"I still believe he's going to win. I think he may be losing some African American constituents because they have the wrong focus, saying that because you have a black president, that he has to address all black issues. Well he is the president for everyone. He has to represent everyone or he won't get elected again," said Bernadine Stallings.
Political experts say the consequence of that voter discontent, whether founded or not, could be a lack of support when it counts.
"The critical thing for blacks and for Hispanics is that, for the most part, they don't vote between candidates historically, it's that they decide to vote or not to vote, to turn out or not to turn out. If people support him at the same percentage rate, but stay home then he could lose. He could very well lose," Smiley said.

Rays beat Rangers

Rays beat Rangers in playoffs opener

(AP)  ARLINGTON, Texas - Making only his second major league start, Tampa Bay's Matt Moore pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Rays to a 9-0 win over the Texas Rangers in Friday's opener of their American League Division Series.

Kelly Shoppach homered twice and drove in five runs, Johnny Damon also homered and Tampa Bay dominated the whole way thanks mostly to their 22-year-old rookie pitcher.

In Friday's other AL playoff series opener, the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers were tied 1-1 when the game was suspended by rain.

According to a rule adopted by Major League Baseball two years ago, the game is not postponed. Instead, it will pick up Saturday at the point of suspension — weather permitting — with the Yankees coming to bat in the second inning.

The delay did mean both teams will likely be without their ace pitchers, who started Friday. Detroit's Justin Verlander and New York's C.C. Sabathia were unlikely to resume Saturday and may not pitch again in the best-of-five series.

The Rays played for the first time since their dramatic rally on the final day of the regular season, coming back from a seven-run deficit to beat the New York Yankees in extra innings, and thereby edge Boston for the AL wilcard.

Manager Joe Maddon had no qualms about starting the series with Moore, who made his first start last week at Yankee Stadium and struck out 11 in five scoreless innings.

And just that quickly, Moore has gone from top pitching prospect to postseason star. Facing the AL's top-hitting team, Moore struck out six.

Rookie Brandon Gomes and Wade Davis both pitched a hitless inning in relief to complete the first shutout in Rays postseason history.

Moore, who had thrown only 9 1-3 innings in the majors before this start, took a deep breath before his first pitch. He was the first pitcher to ever start a postseason opener with only one previous career start. He was smiling by the late innings and greeted by hugs in the Rays dugout after he had thrown his last pitch.

Having the youngster on the mound led to another important decision for Maddon, who opted to go with the light-hitting Shoppach behind the plate.

The catcher from nearby Fort Worth homered twice off Rangers ace C.J. Wilson and matched a Rays postseason record with five RBIs.

After Wilson hit Ben Zobrist with a pitch in the second, Damon followed with a two-run homer that put the Rays ahead to stay. What looked like a high popup just kept carrying and cleared the wall in right field.

Shoppach, a .176 hitter in the regular season, followed with a single and later scored on a hit by Matt Joyce for a 3-0 lead. An inning later, Shoppach hit a 410-foot homer to center.

Tampa led 8-0 after Damon reached base on a two-out error in the fifth and Shoppach followed with a 415-foot homer to left.

Damon drove in another run with an infield single in the ninth.

Wilson had never lost to the Rays until Friday, when he gave up eight runs (six earned) over five innings. His worst outing of the season came at the most inopportune time.

Texas and Tampa Bay have picked up where they left off last postseason, when the visiting team won every game in their five-game series. That's the only time that has ever happened in the majors.

The Rangers won that series and then went on to beat the Yankees in the AL championship before losing to San Francisco in the World Series. Texas is only 3-9 in postseason games at Rangers Ballpark, where they had never won a playoff game until last year.

Game 2 is Saturday. James Shields will start for the Rays against Derek Holland.

Game 2 of the Yankees-Tigers series was pushed back to Sunday.

Baram Regatta Marudi 2011

The main objective of the Baram Regatta was to substitute for old bloody-feuds and to persuade the tribes to aid the government in keeping the peace. To suppress fighting and head-hunting, the Resident of Baram, Charles Hose organized an annual race for the war-canoes of all the villagers to be held in April 1899. All the longhouses in the Baram and Tinjar were informed. They included the Kenyahs of the Baram, the Lirongs of the Tinjar and Madangs of the central highlands as well as a number of Ibans.

On 6th April 1899, about five thousand people from Baram and the Madang was encamped between the Resident’s bungalow and Fort Hose. The Ibans took up quarters in the long row of Chinamen’s shop in Marudi town. The Tinjar Lirongs arrived after sunset. They were dressed in full war attires in their war canoes and on arrival the Lirongs rushed up the hill to attack the Kenyahs in a mock battle. After the clash, everyone settled down quietly for the night.

On daybreak of 7th April 1899, all the people assembled in a temporary conference hall built with palm leaves. The Baram chiefs sat on a long platform on one side of the hall while the Tinjar men on the oter. The Resident placed himself in the middle. The two parties exchanged messages and presents and the great boat race was announced to take place on 8th April 1899.

At daybreak of the regatta twenty racing boats from all the longhouses were brought to the starting point for miles upriver from the Fort. Each boat carry between sixty t seventy men, sitting two abreast. At the sound of a gun, the twenty boats leaped through the water. Soon, two boats drew out in the front with a grand neck-to-neck race. The winner was a crew of peaceful downriver folks who learned boat making from the Malays of the coast. The crowds on the bank behaved in good humor and forgot their feuds in the interest of racing.

As of today the regatta, with all its attraction, was not just a mere celebration but beneath its glamorous facade the courageous young paddlers from all over Baram district will gather here in Marudi to competed in this thrilling 3days boat races. This BARAM REGATTA will always be remembered as the historic significance of the fiesta.

Held once every two years, Baram Regatta, fills with excitement and celebrations, is a reflection of the Baram’s colourful past and carries with it cultural and historical significance. Colourful decorated long boats trying to out run each other in the Baram river, boasting the might of both the rowers and quality of their crafts. For Baram Regatta 2011, the organizer has line out interesting program such as speed boat race, cultural shows, Baram Idol, beauty pageants, exhibitions and many more.
